Nigerian Officers to Face Military Trial Over Alleged Coup Plot

(MENAFN) A group of Nigerian military officers will face a court-martial following allegations that they plotted to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government last year, according to an armed forces statement.

Sixteen officers were detained last October for what were described as “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.” While the military initially dismissed reports of a coup attempt, an investigation later determined that some of the officers would be brought before a military judicial panel.

It remains unclear exactly how many of the 16 will stand trial, but authorities emphasized that the proceedings will uphold accountability as well as “the principles of fairness and due process.” The military added that attempts to unseat the elected government are “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards” expected of its personnel.

Nigeria has a history of military intervention in politics, with multiple coups between 1966 and 1993, making any allegations of plotting highly sensitive. In recent years, while rumors of dissent within the ranks have occasionally surfaced amid concerns about insecurity and public frustration, the armed forces have repeatedly affirmed their loyalty to civilian rule.

Since 1999, Nigeria has experienced uninterrupted civilian governance. The announcement comes as the West African region has seen a resurgence of coups, with governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea toppled by military forces in recent years. Guinea has recently returned to democratic rule with junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya elected president.
